Ever heard that phrase “the future is in your hands?” It’s a favorite among major companies as advertising slogans, but rarely does it actually have any meaning. By and large, your future is not in your own hands. Think about it: it’s up to the employer whether or not to give you the job, it’s up to the bank whether or not to give you the loan – in the end, many things in life really are not under your control. But never fear. If there’s one area of life which is entirely operated under your own power, it’s your choice of activities and entertainment in which to indulge in your free time. So when you’re online and playing games (or whatever else you choose to indulge in), your settings, preferences, and choices are entirely within your control. And the first choice that you have to make is the following: flash or download games?
There are two basic ways in which to enjoy online games: in flash or via downloaded software which generally comes from the website of the online institution offering the game itself. Each option carries its own set of benefits and drawbacks (as does everything in life, really), but the difference here is that the choice of gaming method is entirely within your control.
Flash Games
Let’s start with flash gaming. Flash gaming is perhaps the easiest online gaming method in the world because it requires very little effort on your part. If a game is coded in Flash that basically means that the online institution offers the game from its own web servers – in full. There is really nothing left for you, the consumer, to do, other than go to the website and click on whatever link opens the game and start playing. The benefits of flash gaming are pretty obvious here: there is no requirement to download anything in order to play. Some don’t mind downloading, so for them playing in flash versus downloading software is more or less a toss-up; six of one and one half-dozen of the other, in other words. However, for those who prefer not to have to download software from an online institution in order to play a game – or for those who have Windows Vista with which doing more or less anything is close to impossible – playing in flash is the perfect alternative. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s convenient. However, be warned: you’re playing directly off of the site’s servers so if you have an Internet connection which tends toward slowness or toward stopping and starting constantly, playing in Flash might not be the best choice for you. On the other hand, however, playing through the site itself allows you to enjoy the game from any computer with a stable Internet connection.
Downloaded Games
Playing downloaded games takes a little more effort, but has decided benefits to it as well. Such a mode of online gaming requires the player to download software from the site of the institution offering the game and to save it somewhere on his or her hard drive. For those who do not mind downloading, this allows you as the player to save the game on your computer and to be able to open at any time, without having to worry about the ups and downs of a testy Internet connection. What this essentially means is that the player will enjoy being able to play the game on a specific computer any time he or she likes – but only on that computer on which the downloaded software has been saved. Of course, that does not necessarily have to be an issue; it is all too easy these days to save a file on a USB stick and transfer it to another computer, as long as that computer’s owner does not have a problem with it.
In the end, it all really comes down to a matter of preference: Flash or download? This is one choice which will be forever yours.
